An Introduction to The Peoplemap™ System
Before we manage to do anything well, and consistently well, and before we can contribute to a team or lead a team, we need to understand ourselves and others. We probably know very well, both our strengths and our weak points – but we may not have given it a thought to the fact that it is our character, and how we show our character in the world through our behaviour, that counts!
The Peoplemap System™ Personality Type Questionnaire, is made up of just seven questions, taking less than five minutes to complete and self score. Developed and validated by Andrew Mathis, Ph.D. and Michael Lillibridge, Ph.D., the Peoplemap™ Questionnaire has a 95% accuracy rate of identifying the personality types of Leader, People, Free Spirit and Task.
Let us take a moment to look at some of the strengths – and the potential ‘Achilles’ heels’, of these types.
The Leader will recognise himself as someone who is accomplishment-oriented, focused, motivated, and likes to take charge; hopefully others will too, but they may see someone who is impatient, demanding and quick to find fault with them!
A people type will be quick to sign up to a long list of sterling qualities- he is considerate, friendly, helpful, honest, kind, a good listener and someone who just can’t say “No”! Others will agree, but may add that he is too sensitive and easily hurt, or just too damned interested and talkative!
The freespirit type doesn’t hide his qualities; adventurous, creative, an out-of-the –box thinker, easily bored, independent and a risk taker- he can ignite a team or leave them reeling at what they see as outrageous and impossible ideas and demands!
The Task type loves the small print and the set timetable, and may even see himself as mundane and ‘wanting’ for his very qualities. He is organised and dependable, precise, self disciplined, responsible and constantly busy. He thrives in an ordered environment, and often others depend on him to create order from their chaos – and give him small thanks for it!
Just as the human body has mostly two of everything, so our innate personality is, thankfully a matter of two of these types. We come in any conjugation; we may be People – Freespirit, or Task –People, and to add to the sublime mix, we tend to have an element least evident in our behaviour, to be aware of and to aquire as a learned trait - for many Freespirit types it tends to be the Task element, and interestingly, when the rather unusual combination of Freespirit –Task is the main personality, we find a person who, until the Peoplemap training, has battled with one part of them wanting adventure and Risk, while the other Task part of them has heaped oprobrium and caution upon them.
It is a truly exciting and gratifying moment to witness a participant harnessing these polar strengths, determined to get the best out of themselves from now on.
We cannot afford to just pay lip service to this information or give it a passing nod- it is the key to being in command of ourselves. From the outset, in the Peoplemap™ Basic training session these traits begin to make sense and we can identify them in our close relatives and work colleagues and interaction and understanding laced with much humour at our previous prejudices and preconceptions - not to say antipathy and animosity - fall away. In recent feedback, a Peoplemap™ Trainer was told “Three months ago, if we had given them arms they would have shot each other”.
The Peoplemap System™ Questionnaire will be available on line in September. To see full information on the results and the training programmes visit www.peoplemapsystems.com or call me, Caroline Minto, for the Questionnaire in English or in Italian, and to discuss your training needs. |
